TRIPARTITE BATTALION TO BE BASED IN CARPATHIAN UKRAINE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 5 Issue: 11

On January 15 in Carpathian Ukraine’s administrative center Uzhhorod, Defense Ministers Oleksandr Kuzmuk of Ukraine, Janos Szabo of Hungary and Victor Babiuc of Romania signed an agreement to create a joint battalion of the three countries. The unit, to consist mainly of sappers, will train for joint humanitarian operations, disaster relief and peacekeeping missions under United Nations auspices. Its base and main training range will be located near Vynohradiv, near both Uzhhorod and the point at which the three countries’ borders intersect (Ukrainian Television, Flux, Basapress, January 15, 16).

The location symbolizes, not unlike Lviv, the laying to rest of historic territorial disputes among these nations. Ukraine and Poland already operate a joint military unit of a more pronounced combat character and in an advanced stage of training.
