TATARSTAN DEMANDS BILINGUAL LABELING ON IMPORTED CONSUMER PRODUCTS.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 126
As of September 1, labels on all popular consumer goods sold in Tatarstan must be printed in both the state languages of the republic–Russian and Tatar. The new regulation, adopted last week, will apply to goods imported from outside Russia as well as to goods produced inside the country. Heading the list for compulsory bilingual labeling are food products, medicines, cosmetics, household wares, fertilizers and goods produced for children. (Tatar-inform, June 30) Tatarstan is one of the first of Russia’s regions to introduce such legislation, but it is unlikely to be the last.
