RUSSIAN COSSACK MERCENARIES IN ABKHAZIA.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 218

Three Abkhaz troopers, captured by Georgian guerrillas on November 22, turned out to be Russian Cossacks serving “on contract” with the Abkhaz forces. Abkhazia yesterday confirmed this fact and the names of the troopers. It considers them victims of “kidnapping” and seeks to achieve their release. The Cossacks were captured following a punitive raid on a Georgian village in Gali district (Russian agencies, November 23).
