RUSSIAN-CHINESE SUMMIT IS POSTPONED.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 158

Although the Russian-U.S. summit will apparently go forward as planned, the same cannot be said for a Russian-Chinese summit that had been scheduled for September 4-5. On August 21–two days before Boris Yeltsin sacked his government–it was announced that Chinese President Jiang Zemin had informed the Kremlin of Beijing’s desire to postpone the visit to Moscow. The Chinese leader cited recent disastrous flooding in China as the reason for the postponement. Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency reported that Jiang had also canceled a visit to Japan, scheduled for September 6-11. Jiang’s meeting in Moscow was to have taken the form of an informal summit with President Yeltsin. Russian diplomatic sources said they were hopeful that the Russian-Chinese summit could be rescheduled for some time later this year. (Itar-Tass, August 21)
