RUSSIA-U.S. SET SUMMIT DATE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 155

A Kremlin spokesman said yesterday that the upcoming Russian-U.S. summit meeting between Presidents Boris Yeltsin and Bill Clinton will take place in Moscow on September 1-3. (Reuter, August 11) In July, the White House had announced the U.S. president’s decision to visit Russia in late summer or early fall, but the two sides did not immediately set a date for the event. Prior to the July announcement Clinton had indicated his preference for not scheduling the summit until after Russia’s parliament ratified the START II treaty. But ongoing opposition to the treaty among Russian lawmakers led Washington to rethink that strategy and to go forward with the summit plans.

THIRD TIME LUCKY.
