Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 160

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), Aleksy II, says that "North American standards" of religious freedom are not applicable to Russia. (Itar-Tass, Reuter, August 27) Referring to the law on freedom of conscience approved by the Russian parliament but vetoed by President Boris Yeltsin, Aleksy said proselytizing by "non-traditional" faiths should be completely banned in Russia. The patriarch said Russia has its own traditions and history and that it is the job of Russian legislation to protect them. (Itar-Tass, Reuter, August 27)
