MUSLIMS CLASH WITH POLICE IN XINJIANG-UIGHURIA.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 86

Chinese authorities reported yesterday in Beijing a recent clash between the police and Muslim “separatists” in China’s Xinjiang-Uighur Autonomous Region. According to the official report, two Muslims were killed and four captured, one Han Chinese policeman was killed and one wounded in a gun battle in the city of Yili. (Kyodo, May 4)

Incidents between Han Chinese police and local Muslims have gained in frequency in the last two years. Some or perhaps most incidents go unreported by Chinese authorities. This latest clash coincided approximately with Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev’s visit to China (see Kyrgyzstan item above). Xinjiang is home (besides the Uighur) to a Kyrgyz minority, while Kyrgyzstan harbors some Uighurs and Kyrgyz from Xinjiang. –VS
