The same day the armed incursion occurred, Memorial published a list of the names of 447 persons who had been taken into custody by the federal forces and had then been either directly murdered by them or had “disappeared.” In addition to the full name of the victims, the date of birth, place of residence, date of arrest, and other biographical information were often supplied. Here is the entry for one victim on the list, no. 188: “Naip Idigov was living as a forced migrant from the Chechen Republic in the Republic of Ingushetia, in the city of Karabulak, on Zarechnaya Street, House no. 14; he was taken into custody [by Russian soldiers] and then murdered. He was arrested…on 14 February 2002, late in the evening, around 11:00 p.m. The arrest was conducted by about a dozen armed men wearing camouflage uniforms and masks… On the next day, 15 February, the evening television news on ORT [state television] announced that ‘the federal forces as a result of a special operation conducted on the territory of the Chechen Republic had destroyed Naip Idigov, a field commander engaged in the organization of terrorist acts.’ The relatives of Idigov appealed to the [pro-Moscow] procuracy of the Chechen Republic, but they were told that, since Idigov had been ‘kidnapped’ on the territory of Ingushetia, a criminal case should be opened there” (Memo.ru, July 18).
