KAZAKHSTANI RED ACTIVIST SENTENCED.

Madel Ismailov, head of the Almaty leftist group Workers’ Movement, was sentenced yesterday to one year of imprisonment for a speech that "insulted the President’s honor and dignity." Ismailov spoke during a rally at the Lenin monument in Almaty on the Bolshevik Revolution anniversary last November 7. The sentence is appealable but will have to be served in full if sustained on appeal, because Ismailov committed the offense while on probation from a preceding sentence. He had last September been given a suspended term of one year at "corrective labor" for having organized an unlawful rally. (Russian agencies, April 7)

Ismailov has repeatedly been arrested and served several "administrative" detention terms of up to fifteen days for violating the legislation on the conduct of rallies and demonstrations. His group Workers’ Movement is an ally of the Communist party of Kazakhstan, Azamat, Pokolenie, Lad and other leftist opposition organizations. — VS
