…KAZAKHSTAN, UZBEKISTAN, KYRGYZSTAN:

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 55

Three Central Asian presidents yesterday sent separate messages to Boris Yeltsin concerning the Russian Duma resolutions. Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev urged "adequate measures" to address the concerns of CIS countries and asked Yeltsin to inform CIS leaders about the measures taken. In words similar to those of his Azerbaijani counterpart (see above), Nazarbayev warned that the Duma’s actions may lead to disintegration of the CIS. Kyrgyz president Askar Akayev found the Duma’s action to be "a destabilizing factor in the CIS." Uzbek president Islam Karimov in his message described the Duma resolutions as "a call for the restoration of Communist ideology." (Interfax, March 19)
