IMF SUPPORTING UZBEKISTAN’S REFORMS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 158

The International Monetary Fund has approved $259 million in credits to Uzbekistan to support the government’s economic reform program for October 1995-December 1996. The IMF had loaned $50 million last January to support the first phase of reforms, launched in late 1994. In deciding to increase crediting for the second phase, the IMF determined that the Uzbek government has been making "significant progress" in limiting inflation, liberalizing prices and the foreign exchange system, maintaining tight monetary and credit policies, and reducing administrative intervention in the economy. The IMF expects the second phase of the reforms to add momentum to these trends, accelerate privatization, liberalize foreign trade, and increase procurement prices for cotton which is still the country’s main export.
