YELTSIN SAYS CABINET COULD TAKE ANOTHER WEEK.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 4 Issue: 170

Delegations from the European Union and the IMF are in Moscow today, hoping to discover what the economic policies of Yevgeny Primakov’s new government will be. Primakov has only one more day if he is to meet his promise to announce his cabinet by the end of the week. President Boris Yeltsin announced this morning, however, that putting the cabinet together “could take another week.” They were having difficulty, Yeltsin said, agreeing on a finance minister. So far, the cabinet announced by Primakov amounts to a mix of communists and moderate reformers. No coherent policy has yet emerged: On the contrary, new ministers are already issuing contradictory statements on such crucial issues as monetary emission (BBC, September 17).
