KYRGYZSTAN ARRESTS UZBEKS ON SUSPICION OF TERRORISM.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 5 Issue: 50

The antiterrorist unit of Kyrgyzstan’s National Security Ministry has arrested “approximately ten” citizens of Uzbekistan whom it suspects of involvement in last month’s bomb attacks in Tashkent. Announcing the capture yesterday, the ministry described the group as “Wahhabis,” hiding in an apartment building in Bishkek. The ministry claimed that the group had “fiercely resisted” the arrest. Part of the group is still at large and is being tracked down in a joint operation of the Uzbek and Kyrgyz security services (Itar-Tass, March 11). Uzbek authorities have thus far seemed to grope in the dark, fingering a wide range of potential and elusive suspects (see the Monitor, February 24, 26, March 1, 3).
